About Glengarriff

Glengarriff is a small seaside village positioned within the quiet harbour of the sheltered Bantry Bay in West Cork.
It is located at the start of the Beara Peninsula which makes it an idea touring centre for Cork and Kerry.

Glengarriff  ("An Gleann Garbh" - the rugged glen) - lives up to its name which is derived from the rugged beauty of the mountains and wooded valleys surrounding the village. Situated within a National Nature Reserve Glengarriff woods contain some of the oldest and most extensive oak and birch groves left in Ireland. Magnificent views of the Caha Mountains and the Sugarloaf Mountain can be seen from  the roads which hug the coastline or wind along the steep sided valleys. Glengarriff would not be complete without the mention of Garnish Island - Ireland's most outstanding garden island with its internationally famous collection of plants and world-renowned for its Italian Gardens.

During a short ferry crossing across the placid waters of the inner bay, the visitor is rewarded by breathtaking views of the harbour area  the mainland and its coastline, The area offers a host of walks, from strolls in the forest with its rivers and glades of oak, to more ambitious treks up the peaks. As well as abundant natural beauty and an inherent "old world charm, Glengarriff makes an ideal centre for exploring further afield. The wild scenery of the Beara Peninsula starts here, whilst the peace and beauty of the Lakes of Inchigeela, Gougane Barra and the Borlin Valley are only a short drive away.

Also of interest is the Bamboo Park behind Toad Hall, The local amenity area features a new children's playground and Blue Pool lagoon, Other local attractions include nearby Barley Lake and the historic Eccles Hotel. Walking trails in the area are extensive, Boating, kayaking on the bay is regularly scheduled, and live music is frequently available in the evenings at local pubs, particularly during the tourist season.
